February is American Heart Month

Learning CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is important for several reasons. CPR can be crucial in life-threatening situations where a person's heart has stopped beating (cardiac arrest) or they have stopped breathing. The American Heart Association estimates that over 350,000 deaths occur every year due to out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest. In these cardiac events, every second counts. Early CPR, when administered correctly, can significantly increase the chances of survival for someone experiencing cardiac arrest.

Many cardiac arrests occur in public places or at home.  Bystanders are often the first to respond. You may encounter a situation where a family member, friend, or colleague experiences a sudden cardiac arrest. Knowing CPR enables you to provide immediate assistance until professional medical help arrives.  Communities with a higher percentage of CPR-trained individuals have improved overall survival rates for cardiac arrest incidents.

The Park Ridge Fire Department strongly recommends that everyone learn CPR.  Classes are offered monthly.  The 2024 CPR class schedule is linked below.
